Introduction The adductor longus is one of the major muscles found within the inner thigh. It is a triangular-shaped muscle that is part of the hip adductor group. The muscle plays an important role in bringing the thigh towards the centre of the body. The adductor longus muscle is found within the medial compartment of…
Introduction The olfactory nerve is the first cranial nerve (CN I) and is responsible for the sense of smell. It is a sensory nerve that carries information about odours from the nasal cavity to the brain. Olfaction is considered one of the earliest senses in evolutionary history. This sensory pathway has a unique feature: it…
Introduction In humans, the gluteus maximus is the primary hip extensor muscle. It is the largest and most superficial of the three gluteal muscles, and it contributes significantly to the shape and appearance of the hips and buttocks. It is the biggest muscle. Its quadrilateral, dense, fleshy mass gives the buttocks their prominence. Given its…
Introduction The aorta is the body’s largest artery, carrying oxygenated blood from the heart to supply organs and tissues throughout the body. It originates in the left ventricle and is anatomically divided into five regions: the aortic root, ascending aorta, aortic arch, descending thoracic aorta, and abdominal aorta. As it reaches the lower abdomen, the…
The gastrocnemius is a strong muscle group located on the posterior lower leg. This group consists of two large parts–medial and lateral. The gastrocnemius is contracted while running, walking, jumping, or standing on tiptoe. It bends the ankle into plantar flexion and flexes the knee, working in conjunction with the soleus muscle to produce movement…
Introduction The area of the body between the neck and the gluteal regions is called the back. It consists of the extrinsic and intrinsic back muscle compartments as well as the vertebral column, or spine. The back serves a variety of purposes, including protecting and housing the spinal cord, keeping the head and body straight,…
Introduction Your body’s muscles are fragments of soft tissue. They support you in everything from running a marathon to keeping your body motionless. Additionally, muscles support and move your organs. Your heart is a labor-intensive muscle that keeps you alive by beating thousands of times every day. You have a lot of muscles; thus, diseases…
Introduction The longest, strongest, and heaviest bone in the human body is the femur, sometimes referred to as the thigh bone. It is essential for bearing the weight of the body and facilitating a variety of motions, such as running, leaping, and walking. Because of its special structure, which allows for smooth, multidirectional movement, the…
Introduction The optic nerve is a vital nerve that connects the eye to the brain and carries visual information from the retina to the brain for processing. The back of the eye is where the optic nerve is located. The second cranial nerve, often known as cranial nerve II, is one of multiple pairs of…
What is the Muscular System? All of the body’s muscles make up the muscular system. Skeletal muscles, which are connected to bones and allow for voluntary bodily motions, make up the majority of muscles in the muscular system. The human body contains around 650 skeletal muscles, several of which are seen in the figure. In addition…
